Number of containers sent

Over the period 1992 to February 2011, Mission World Aid has sent 111 containers. Figure 1 illustrates the number sent each year and Figure 2 shows the cumulative total of containers.

Containers have been sent to 27 countries as illustrated by Figure 3.

Cost of sending containers

Containers typically cost between $5,000 and $15,000 to send overseas.
Some rules of thumb on the costs when sending from Australia:

Buying a container: 20 ft container A$3,200, 40 ft (8’ high) A$4,000, 40 foot high cube (9’6” high) A$4,200. Buying the container allows the consignee to make use of it for storage/accommodation or as collateral to help them raise their part of the transport costs (i.e. land transport from port).

Shipping costs from Adelaide to East African ports (Mombassa, Dar es Salaam) US$5,000, West Africa US$7,000. South
Pacific, Indonesia, India etc US$3-4000. Land transport in Africa from port to Uganda US$5,000, to Zambia US$6,000, and to South Sudan US$11,000.

Purchase costs are generally low except where pharmeceuticals are involved.

Since 1992, Mission World Aid has spent over $700,000 on the program of sending containers to needy people throughout the world.

Mission World Aid has never received any Government funding or assistance for its programs. Unfortunately philantropic funds are largely focussed on meeting needs within Australia and none provide funds for humanitarian work of the type undertaken by Mission World Aid. It has never received assistance from AusAid.

Description of goods sent

The Table below summarises the containers sent and includes a summary of their contents. In summary Mission World Aid has sent (to February, 2011):

• 36,790 cartons (various sizes) of assorted household goods, medical and clinic materials, school, craft, food, toys, and personal effects
• 1,669 Compressed bales (250 - 300 kg each) of clothes
• 1,276 Hospital beds and mattresses
• 1,396 School desks and chairs
• 526 Computers and monitors and 70 typewriters as well as photocopiers, faxes and printers
• 152 Sewing machines and knitting machines
• 56 Toilets (wc's)

In addition, Mission World Aid has sent:

• Hospital, medical and dental equipment including dental chairs, a dental surgery, Zonta birthing kits, operating theatre tables and operating theatre lights, X-ray machines & developers,dialysis machines, defribrillators, anaesthetic machine, centrifuges, blood analysis machines, cardiac machine, sterilizing unit, oxygen tent, labour bed, humid cribs, diapers, pharmaceuticals, shower chairs, barouches, commodes, patient walkers and lifters, trolleys and bedside tables, wheelchairs.

Note: Container #50 was to be sent to Sri Lanka following the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 but because the country was overwhelmed by containers and could not handle it, the container was forwarded to the Aboriginal community at Ceduna in South Australia.
